This is the second in my series of easy DIY posts showing how to recycle your old jars and tins. In the first I showed you how to make pretty copper tins to display flowers and metallic kilner jars.

Todays post is a cute gold animal jar DIY perfect for storing your beauty items. Its really simple and so effective.
As before make sure you clean your jars really well. Give them all a good wash in hot soapy water and if any label or sticky residue remains you can use some Sticky Stuff Remover which will clean off all your excess label residue, but make sure you then wash your jar or tin again in soapy water as this remover is oil based. Dry off thoroughly.

I’m using 3 matching tall jars and a short jar too and have chosen animals for the top of my gold animal jars which I picked up in a tube for £4 from a toy shop. You could also use other kind of small toys like dinosaurs, shapes or plastic flowers. I tried really hard to find mini plastic pineapples as I reckon this would have looked so cool but sadly no luck. I chose 4 animals which have a distinctive shape and will look good when sprayed.

First things first is to very lightly spray your lids and animals with a primer. I’ve used grey but you could use white primer too. Lay your lids and animals on newspaper and do your primer coats very lightly and leave to dry and then repeat again lightly so you don’t get paint build up. Make sure you spray under your animals too.

Once primed glue your animals to your lids with a clear plastic glue, a little bit on each foot. Leave to dry.
Then place your lids on newspaper again and start your metallic spray colour. I’ve chosen gold but bright silver would look so pretty too. Again do light coats with plenty drying time in between. Don’t use a clear sealer on top as this affect the metallic finish.

Then use your gold animal DIY jars to store whatever you like. I’ve popped cotton wool and some of my beauty bits and bobs inside and sat them on my dressing table but you could also use them to store stationery or home bits like pins, paperclips or pencils.

My next jar DIY will be some clever use of masking tape to create shapes and colour effects.
